Old Montréal and Place Jacques-Cartier

The historic and touristic heart of Montréal, Place Jacques-Cartier is a gently sloping cobblestone esplanade lined with restaurants and 19th-century buildings, linking City Hall to the Old Port.

Developed starting in 1804 on the site of the former residence of Montreal's governor (the Château de Vaudreuil, destroyed by fire in 1803), the square hosted the city's public market until 1847, when it officially took the name of explorer Jacques Cartier. It is dominated by Nelson's Column, erected in 1809 in honour of the British admiral who defeated the French at Trafalgar — one of Canada's oldest commemorative monuments, whose presence in this French-speaking city often surprises visitors. Today pedestrian in summer, the square remains a vibrant gathering point, animated by street performers, caricaturists, and outdoor terraces, making it the natural starting point for any visit to Old Montreal.
