Built directly on the archaeological site where Montréal was founded in 1642, this museum—unique in Canada—lets visitors descend below street level to explore authentic remains.
Inaugurated in 1992 for Montreal's 350th anniversary, Pointe-à-Callière owes its existence to extensive archaeological excavations conducted in the 1980s, which uncovered the successive foundations of the city since the arrival of the first settlers. The museum combines an underground journey through the ruins (the city's first Catholic cemetery, a former main sewer, and the foundations of the Sainte-Anne market that once housed the Parliament of the United Province of Canada) with a multimedia show projected directly onto the ruins. As Canada's only large-scale urban archaeology museum, it remains the natural starting point for understanding Montreal's genesis.
