Monts-Valin National Park

Monts-Valin National Park protects a mountain massif whose peaks exceed 980 metres in elevation, conferring upon the territory a subarctic climate distinct from the rest of the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region despite its relatively moderate latitude. This unique climatic characteristic is explained by an orographic effect: moisture-laden winds from the Saguenay Fjord and Lake Saint-Jean encounter the massif and deposit exceptional quantities of snow and rime ice, transforming the conifers into contorted white silhouettes locally nicknamed "ghosts." This Valley of Ghosts, accessible by snowshoe or cross-country ski during the winter season, constitutes the park's most distinctive attraction and draws photographers and polar landscape enthusiasts from far beyond the region's borders. During summer, a network of trails leading to Pic-de-la-Tête-de-Chien and other peaks of the massif offers panoramic views over the Saguenay Fjord, Lake Saint-Jean, and the surrounding territory. The park also lends itself to fishing, wildlife observation—notably moose, whose population density is exceptionally high—and, in winter, cross-country skiing and fatbiking on maintained trails. The park's rustic lodges and traditional chalets, particularly sought-after in the winter season, typically require booking several months in advance due to their popularity among enthusiasts of immersive nature experiences.
