Musée du Fjord

The Fjord Museum fulfills a dual mission of scientific outreach and showcasing the region's natural and historical heritage, with special emphasis on the aquatic sciences that define Saguenay territory. Its centerpiece, a 53,000-liter saltwater aquarium fed by the fjord's own waters, allows visitors to observe marine species typical of this unique environment where fresh and salt waters mingle — starfish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and other benthic invertebrates that visitors can in some cases touch directly, in a hands-on educational approach particularly beloved by families. The museum's permanent exhibition also explores the geological formation of the Saguenay Fjord and Ha! Ha! Bay, as well as the history of human settlement in this region, through an immersive multimedia show presented aboard a replica vessel called the Navis. Located in the La Baie borough, the museum is part of a complementary attractions hub that includes the Pyramids of Ha! Ha! — a commemorative monument to the 1996 flood built from salvaged "Yield" road signs — and the Air Defence Museum housed in a former Protestant chapel near the Bagotville military base, Quebec's only museum of its kind dedicated to military aviation.
