Gilles Vigneault's Birthplace and Heritage Site

In this remote village of Acadian and Innu fishers at the end of Route 138, the birthplace of poet and songwriter Gilles Vigneault, along with the old school restored by village volunteers, tells the origins of one of Québec song's greatest artists.

Natashquan, whose name derives from the Innu-aimun word meaning "where one hunts the bear," owes much of its renown throughout Quebec to its most celebrated son: Gilles Vigneault, a poet and singer-songwriter whose work profoundly shaped contemporary Québécois cultural identity. This village of approximately 264 residents shares its territory with a neighboring Innu reserve, exemplifying the historic cohabitation between Acadian communities—descendants of families who came from the Magdalen Islands and the Gaspé Peninsula to engage in cod fishing—and the First Nations peoples who have inhabited this coastline for far longer. Vigneault's birthplace, integrated into a heritage and family site dedicated to his legacy, invites visitors to discover the modest setting in which this artist grew up to become an iconic figure in Francophone musical heritage. The village's old schoolhouse, built in 1913 and relocated to its current site, was restored in 2006 thanks to more than 2,000 volunteer hours contributed by the community. Today it houses an exhibition devoted to Vigneault's works as well as the village's founding families. The famous "Galets"—small fishing cabins once used for storing equipment and selling cod catches—complete the visit and bear witness to the traditional economy that shaped the identity of this remote village, now nicknamed "Innucadie" in reference to its dual cultural heritage.
