Fort-Témiscamingue–Obadjiwan National Historic Site

The Lake Témiscamingue area has served for centuries as a strategic crossroads for the fur trade, where the Ottawa River watershed flowing southward meets that of the Harricana River ascending northward to James Bay, making this region a natural gateway between the interior Algonquin territories and the commercial networks established along the St. Lawrence River. It was in this context that in 1686, a French expedition led by the Chevalier Pierre de Troyes, accompanied by Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville—who would later found Louisiana—erected a makeshift fort at Lake Témiscamingue before continuing on to the Abitibi region, as part of the wars between French and English companies competing for control of the fur trade in this frontier region of the continent. The site, today designated as a National Historic Site of Canada under the name Fort-Témiscamingue–Obadjiwan—the latter term honoring the ancestral Algonquin occupation of the territory long before the arrival of European traders—allows visitors to understand the evolution of this trading post through successive changes in colonial rule, until its transformation in the nineteenth century into a gateway for timber merchants who rediscovered this northern frontier of Quebec and developed the forestry industry that would shape the region's economy for decades to come.
