La Pulperie de Chicoutimi — Regional Museum

La Pulperie de Chicoutimi occupies the site of the Chicoutimi Pulp Company, founded and directed by Julien-Édouard-Alfred Dubuc, nicknamed the "pulp king" in his time for his pivotal role in developing the region's paper industry. Constructed gradually between 1897 and 1921, the industrial complex boasted four pulp mills at its peak, an electrical substation, and a mechanical workshop, reflecting the scale of this enterprise that made Chicoutimi a vital hub of North American newsprint production for many years. Since 2002, the regional museum dedicated to the history of Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean has been housed in the mechanical workshop, which was inaugurated in 1921 and remains one of the best-preserved buildings on the site. The industrial remains preserved here—which many visitors liken to cathedrals of stone and reinforced concrete—offer a tangible sense of the scale of the installations that shaped the region's economic landscape at the turn of the 20th century. The museum features permanent and temporary exhibitions on the natural, historical, and cultural heritage of the region, including art collections and artifacts related to the daily lives of workers during the industrial era. Together with the neighbouring downtown Chicoutimi and its lively Racine Street, the site stands as one of the borough's major cultural hubs, and also hosts several large-scale festivals, including the international short film festival Regard.
