The world's largest sanctuary dedicated to Saint Joseph, founded by Brother André, the Oratory welcomes about two million pilgrims and visitors each year and forms the highest visible point on the Montréal skyline.
Born Alfred Bessette in 1845 into a poor family in the Iberville region, Brother André became a porter at Collège Notre-Dame and earned a reputation as a healer that drew ever-growing crowds. In 1904, he built a modest wooden chapel from his own savings, marking the beginning of a construction project spanning over sixty years that would result in Canada's largest church, whose dome—one of the world's largest self-supporting domes of its kind—rises to 300 metres above sea level. Brother André, canonized in 2010, rests within the sanctuary; his pilgrims continue to climb on their knees the 99 steps of the exterior votive staircase, a gesture of devotion still visible to visitors today.
