Québec's oldest and largest art museum, the MMFA brings together nearly 47,000 works across five pavilions, including a former church converted into a Canadian art exhibition space.
Founded in 1860 as the Art Association of Montreal, the museum was significantly enriched in 1877 by a major bequest from businessman Benaiah Gibb, which enabled the construction of Canada's first building designed specifically to house an art collection. Its encyclopedic collection spans international art, Quebec and Canadian art, Inuit and Indigenous art, as well as decorative arts. The Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion occupies the former Erskine and American Church, whose twenty original Tiffany stained glass windows rank among the world's most important collections of their kind.
