One of the largest open-air public markets in North America, at the heart of Little Italy, where market gardeners, cheesemakers, and culinary artisans have gathered since 1933.
Inaugurated on May 27, 1933 by Mayor Camillien Houde on the site of a former Irish lacrosse field, the Northern Market (renamed Jean-Talon in 1982 in honour of New France's first intendant) owes its existence to the city's determination to create jobs during the Great Depression. Open year-round today, it remains a vibrant meeting place between local producers and cultural communities, particularly the Italian community that has shaped the surrounding neighbourhood since the early 20th century.
