Île Verte and Its Lighthouse

The only year-round inhabited island on the St. Lawrence in this stretch, Île Verte is home to the river's oldest still-operating lighthouse, reachable on foot via a natural ice bridge in winter—a quirk that delights curious visitors every year.

The Île Verte Lighthouse, built in 1809, remains the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Saint Lawrence River, standing as a testament to the critical importance of commercial navigation along this particularly challenging stretch of the estuary in the early 19th century. The island, normally accessed by ferry, becomes accessible on foot or by vehicle in winter via a natural ice bridge that forms between the island and the mainland — a phenomenon requiring particular caution yet remaining a renowned winter experience. The Baie de l'Isle-Verte National Wildlife Reserve, located nearby, is also home to one of the region's finest bird-watching sites.
