Cap-de-Bon-Désir Interpretation and Observation Centre

The Cap-de-Bon-Désir area owes its exceptional reputation to a rare bathymetric feature: the immediate proximity between the rocky shoreline and an abrupt drop-off of the ocean floor creates ideal feeding conditions for several whale species, allowing them to approach observers on shore at an unusually close distance. The site, integrated into Parks Canada's network as part of the Saguenay–Saint Lawrence Marine Park, combines this observation mission with an exhibition dedicated to the history of lighthouse keeping, as the facilities include a former lighthouse that watched over this demanding stretch of coastline. Visitors can observe notably the minke whale, the species most commonly spotted in the area, as well as, occasionally, the humpback whale or the fin whale further offshore. The site operates in complementarity with the Escoumins Marine Environment Discovery Centre, located a short distance away on the same coastal route, where interpreter-divers provide an even more direct immersion into the Saint Lawrence's underwater ecosystem. Cap-de-Bon-Désir thus exemplifies the North Shore interpretation philosophy that favors direct, free observation from the shoreline, accessible to all without requiring a boat.
