Knowlton Heritage Village (Lac-Brome)

Knowlton, one of the constituent villages of the Municipality of Lac-Brome, has preserved since its founding in 1855 a remarkable architectural ensemble of striking homogeneity, where Victorian homes blend harmoniously with municipal buildings, shops, schools, and places of worship that testify to the economic, industrial, and cultural wealth the region enjoyed at the turn of the 20th century. A well-marked heritage trail allows visitors to discover this rich built legacy: the circuit traditionally begins at the Musée du Lac-Brome, continues along Lakeside Drive along the lakeshore, and concludes on the picturesque Victoria Street, where interpretive panels illustrated with archival photographs tell the story of each significant residence and building. This heritage preservation initiative, supported notably by the regional network of Chemin des Cantons, provides insight into how successive waves of Loyalist and French-Canadian settlement shaped the distinctive architectural identity of this village, today also recognized for its refined gastronomy and Lac-Brome duck, a regional culinary specialty appreciated far beyond the borders of the Eastern Townships.
