Percé Rock

Gaspésie's most recognizable symbol, this massive limestone rock pierced by a natural arch rises just a few hundred metres offshore, formed roughly 400 million years ago.

Already mentioned by Samuel de Champlain in 1603 under the name "Isle Percée," the rock has lost several of its arches over the centuries due to erosion—only one remains today, at its tip. Direct access to the foot of the rock is now prohibited to protect the colonies of seabirds that breed there; it can be admired from the village or during a sea excursion that allows you to circumnavigate it. Percé, which owes its name to this remarkable formation, is a member of the Association of Quebec's Most Beautiful Villages and is part of a UNESCO-recognized World Geopark.
