Fort Chambly National Historic Site

Fort Chambly occupies a strategic location at the foot of the Richelieu River rapids, a natural corridor that served as the primary invasion route between the British colony of New York and New France from the early 18th century. Before the construction of the current stone fortification in 1711, the site had already hosted three successive wooden forts, testament to the constant defensive importance placed on this location throughout decades of colonial tensions. The stone structure, whose military architecture reflects the defensive standards of the French era, was at the heart of French troop defences against British assaults coming up the Richelieu River, before experiencing several changes of ownership and uses through subsequent conflicts between colonial powers and later between the British Crown and American insurgents. Today restored and managed by Parks Canada, the site invites visitors to discover 18th-century defensive architecture in a remarkable natural setting, where the fortification's remains still dominate the rapids that historically motivated its strategic location. The fort serves as the natural starting point for a broader exploration of the Richelieu Valley, marking the southern entrance to the Canal-de-Chambly National Historic Site, directly accessible from its first locks.
