Bromont, Montagne d'Expériences

Founded in 1964 by brothers Roland and Germain Désourdy on the territory of the former villages of West Shefford and Adamsville, Bromont developed according to an original economic model blending year-round outdoor tourism with high-tech industry. The mountain itself, which peaks at Mount Brome with its secondary summits of Mount Gale and Mount Soleil, welcomed its first skiers in 1964 and has since transformed into a mega-resort complex featuring a ski station, water park, over 250 km of mountain bike trails, and a network of outdoor pathways belonging to Parc des sommets. Alongside this recreational tourism vocation, Bromont developed from the 1970s onward a major technology industrial park, successively attracting IBM Canada, Teledyne Dalsa, and more recently C2MI, a microelectronics research center inaugurated in 2012 in partnership with the University of Sherbrooke—making the city an atypical case where mass recreation and cutting-edge innovation coexist closely. The mountainous territory also shelters a protected natural area on Mount Gale, where private lands and conservation objectives overlap, illustrating the ongoing tension between intensive tourism development and the preservation of forest ecosystems that characterize the entire region.
