The cradle of the archipelago's settlement, designated a historic site in 1983, this hamlet of traditional cedar-shingled buildings, once devoted to fishing and trade, today houses artisan boutiques, cafés, and the Vieux Treuil performance hall.
La Grave, whose name derives from the French word 'grève' meaning a pebbly, sandy shore, holds a foundational place in the history of settlement in the Îles-de-la-Madeleine, having been frequented as early as the 16th century by Basque, Breton, and Norman fishermen before several predominantly Acadian families settled there in 1762 alongside entrepreneur Richard Gridley to exploit fishing and walrus hunting. For more than two centuries, La Grave remained the economic heart of the archipelago: fishermen would land their catches here to process, salt, and dry them, while merchants purchased cargo destined for sale, gradually accumulating shops, warehouses, and salt works along this pebbled beach. It was not until the 20th century, with the construction of a deep-water wharf, the formation of fishing cooperatives, and the erection of a modern cold storage facility, that La Grave's traditional installations became obsolete, sealing its decline as an active fishing site. Designated a historic site by Quebec's Ministry of Cultural Affairs in 1983, the site has since been beautifully repurposed: its traditional wooden buildings now house artisan shops, art galleries, cafés, and restaurants, while the Vieux Treuil performance hall, a multiple award-winning cultural venue, has perpetuated a multidisciplinary artistic program for forty years at the very heart of this cherished Madelinot heritage site.
