Canada's oldest still-active Chinatown, recognizable by its monumental arches, concentrating restaurants, grocery stores, and cultural associations since the late 19th century.
Established in the 1860s-1870s by Chinese immigrants who initially came to work on the construction of the Canadian transcontinental railway, the neighbourhood developed into a vibrant commercial and community hub despite facing significant periods of discrimination (notably the head tax imposed on Chinese immigrants between 1885 and 1923). The traditional-style archways erected at the neighbourhood's entrances, along with the Sun Yat-Sen Garden, define this compact yet culturally rich district today, located just steps away from the Entertainment District and Old Montreal.
