Pointe-Taillon National Park

Pointe-Taillon National Park protects a portion of the natural lowlands region of Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, characterized by an almost flat landscape dominated by sandy plains formed by the retreat of glacial meltwater. Pointe Taillon itself extends as a long peninsula between the waters of Lake Saint-Jean—a true inland sea spanning 1,100 km², Quebec's largest inhabited body of water—and the Péribonka River. This unique geographic configuration gives the park a distinctly beach-resort atmosphere, rare within Quebec's national park network: its endless sandy shores, where lake waters warm considerably more than those of the Saint Lawrence River, make it a highly popular swimming destination during the summer season. The territory also encompasses a vast peatland with distinctive plant life and provides ideal habitat for observing birds, beavers, and moose. The Véloroute des Bleuets, a cycling circuit exceeding 256 km that encircles all of Lake Saint-Jean, passes through the park for approximately 15 km—one of the route's most cherished sections thanks to its unobstructed views across the lake. The area also offers sea kayaking and features rustic camping sites along the shoreline, some accessible only by water or bicycle, for a complete immersion in this lakeside plain landscape.
