An elegant Neoclassical building topped with a silver dome, Bonsecours Market today houses Québec craft boutiques, restaurants, and exhibition halls in the heart of Old Montréal.
Inaugurated in 1847, Bonsecours Market has served in turn as a public market, as the seat of the Parliament of the United Canadas (temporarily, following the Parliament fire in Montreal in 1849), and as City Hall from 1852 to 1878. Recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada and ranked among the country's ten most beautiful heritage buildings, it now houses the Quebec Council of the Crafts as well as some fifteen boutiques by local designers. Its dome, illuminated at night, changes color throughout the evening, becoming a true urban clock visible from the river.
