Reford Gardens (Jardins de Métis)

A Canadian national historic site, Reford Gardens rank among the northernmost gardens in North America, where Elsie Reford managed, thanks to a unique microclimate, to grow species as rare as the Himalayan blue poppy.

Originally a simple fishing camp acquired in 1886 by George Stephen, president of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, the estate became the property of his niece Elsie Reford in 1918. Starting in 1926, she undertook the creation of an exceptional garden, working through trial and error for more than thirty years. A pioneer of Canadian horticulture, she was among the first to cultivate azaleas and rhododendrons in Quebec, in a setting that no one would have believed suitable for such species. Today, the site also hosts North America's largest contemporary garden festival, bringing together each summer the creations of international landscape architects.
