ASTROLab and Observatory of Mont-Mégantic National Park

Founded in 1996 to promote scientific culture among the general public, ASTROLab du Mont-Mégantic has developed in parallel with the designation, in 2007, of the surrounding territory as the world's first international dark sky reserve—a recognition that imposes strict lighting standards on neighbouring municipalities to preserve the nocturnal darkness essential for astronomical observation. The centre offers a two-part experience: a daytime visit at the base of the mountain, where visitors explore thematic galleries dedicated to astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology, and watch an immersive 4K giant-screen film tracing the history of the universe from the smallest particles of matter to the complexity of Earth's biosphere; followed in the evening by the opportunity to participate in astronomy evenings hosted by professional astronomers, with access to the summit observatory and its 1.6-metre diameter telescope, Canada's most powerful instrument dedicated to science outreach. The site also organizes each summer the popular Mont-Mégantic Popular Astronomy Festival as well as a special event coinciding with the Perseid meteor shower, two gatherings that attract astronomy enthusiasts from across the province to this remote corner of the Eastern Townships where light pollution remains minimal.
